heihachi hayashida
We first hear about Heihachi Hayashida when Kambei, Katsuhiro, Kirara and Rikichi are looking for more samurais to come back with them to Kanna Village to fight off the impending arrival of Nobuseri. They believed that if they ask seven samurais, at least one of them will agree. At the end of the day, in which they've already asked six samurais to join them and was unsuccessful, they heard about a samurai who chopped firewood in exchange for tea, and also made toothpicks for that tea shop.
Meanwhile, back at their temporary hideout in the city, Masanoji made a deal with someone, who we will come to know as Heihachi, to pay for his purchase by chopping wood. While doing his part of the bargain, Heihachi met Gorobei, and we find out that even though Heihachi has participated in the last war, he hasn't killed anyone. He explained that due to his timid character, he was forced to work as a sapper, and didn't know whether to feel lucky or not that he survived.
Soon after, Gorobei asked whether he's interested in killing 40 bandits, and later on introduced Heihachi to Kambei's group, who seems crestafallen as they couldn't find the samurai firewood chopper. Seeing as how they search didn't really fail, they formally invited Heihachi to be one the seven samurais to protect Kanna Village.
Heihachi is one of the light-hearted samurais in their group, along with Gorobei and he seems to have a positive outlook in life. In battle, he uses his resourcefulness to help out the others. We see on episode 5 how he used a fishing rod sort of apparatus to help defeat Kyuzo's partner (forgot his name) and later on saved Kirara and Katsuhiro's life.
